  1. The Case of the Missing Slice

CHARACTERS: NINA and NOAH, twins; UNCLE DEV

(Thanksgiving afternoon. A kitchen. A pumpkin pie sits on the counter with one slice missing.)

NINA: (pointing) Noah! You ate a piece of the pie!

NOAH: I did not! You love pumpkin pie more than anybody.

NINA: I was setting the table the whole time. Ask Uncle Dev.

NOAH: And I was walking the dog. Ask Uncle Dev.

(UNCLE DEV walks in, whistling. There is a bit of orange on his chin.)

UNCLE DEV: What's all the shouting about?

NINA AND NOAH: (together) Somebody ate the pie!

UNCLE DEV: (rubbing his chin) Well, that is a mystery. (He sees orange on his fingers and freezes.) Hmm. It seems I was testing the pie. To make sure it was safe.

NOAH: (laughing) Was it safe, Uncle Dev?

UNCLE DEV: Perfectly safe. I'd better test it again after dinner, just to be sure.

  3. Frogs and Toads

    Text 1: Frogs

Frogs have smooth, wet skin. They usually live in or near water, such as ponds and streams. A frog has long, strong back legs, so it can leap far in a single jump. Frogs lay their eggs in clumps in the water. The eggs hatch into tadpoles, which grow legs and become frogs.

    Text 2: Toads

Toads have dry, bumpy skin. They can live farther from water, in gardens and fields. A toad's back legs are shorter than a frog's, so it takes small hops or walks. Toads lay their eggs in long strings in the water. Like frogs, toads start life as tadpoles.

    1. AHigh up in trees

  5. Make a Floating Compass

People have used compasses to find their way for hundreds of years. You can make a simple one at home.

You will need: a steel sewing needle, a small magnet, a slice of cork about as thick as a coin, a bowl of water, and an adult helper

    Steps

    1. Ask an adult to help you handle the needle, because its point is sharp.

    2. Hold the needle by its eye. Slide the magnet along the needle from the eye to the point, in one direction only. Do this about 30 times.

    3. Lay the needle flat on top of the cork slice.

    4. Gently set the cork in the middle of the bowl of water.

    5. Watch the needle. It will slowly turn until it points north and south.

    Why It Works

Rubbing the needle with the magnet turns the needle into a weak magnet. Earth acts like a giant magnet, so the floating needle lines up with it.

    5.

What should you do right before you set the cork in the bowl of water?

    1. ASlide the magnet along the needle about 30 times.
    2. BFill the bowl with sand.

    1. ATo tell a story about a sailor
    2. BTo list the materials needed
    3. CTo warn readers about the sharp needle
    4. DTo explain the science behind the steps
  8. Kite Day

The wind came knocking at our door And shook the windows too. It whistled, "Come out, come and play! There's nothing else to do!" We grabbed the kite with the dragon tail And raced across the hill. The string pulled tight, the dragon rose, Then suddenly hung still. "Run faster!" shouted Grandpa Joe. I ran until I flew, Or that is how it felt to me, With nothing but the blue. The dragon climbed above the trees, A ribbon bright as flame. It swam among the clouds as though The sky had called its name. We stayed out till the sun went down And wind went home to bed. I still can feel that tugging string Inside my hand and head.
