Independent School Entrance Exam

ISEE practice tests

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is an admission test used by many US private and independent schools. It has four scored sections, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and Mathematics Achievement, and an essay that schools read but E3n does not score.

Our ISEE practice tests follow E3n's published shape for the Lower and Middle Levels: each section's length, time and four answer choices. Every test is new when your child starts it, and the score shows straight away. The reading passages are written by us.

Questions

What parents ask

Are these real ISEE questions?
No. ISEE questions are secure. We write our own questions in the style of each question type E3n describes, at the same length, time and number of choices.
Which level should my child practice?
The level for the grade your child is applying to. Lower Level is for entry to Grades 5 and 6 (children now in Grades 4 and 5). Middle Level is for entry to Grades 7 and 8 (children now in Grades 6 and 7).
Can my child use a calculator?
No. Calculators are not allowed on the ISEE, so practice every section by hand, with scrap paper.
Is there a penalty for guessing?
No. The ISEE counts right answers only, so your child should answer every question.
What about the essay?
The ISEE ends with a 30-minute essay on a given topic. E3n does not score it; it is sent to the schools. Our tests cover the four scored sections.
Is it free?
Sitting is free: make a free account and your child can sit as many ISEE tests as you like. The private school pack (US$69 for six months, covering ISEE and SSAT) shows which questions were right, the right answers and a worked solution for each. The US bundle (US$99) covers every US test we offer.
Does a practice score predict my child's ISEE score?
No. The ISEE reports scaled scores, percentiles and stanines against other applicants in the same grade, which only the real test can do. Our score is the number of practice questions answered correctly.
