The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
For families in England. The Year 4 check game above is built to the same shape.
- Who sits it?
- Every Year 4 child at a state-funded school in England, including academies, free schools and special schools. Independent schools do not take part.
- When is it?
- Schools give the check during a two-week window in June, with a catch-up week straight after.
- How does it work?
- It is done on a screen. After three practice questions there are 25 questions from the 2 to 12 times tables, with more from the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables. Each question has 6 seconds, then there is a 3-second pause before the next. It takes under five minutes.
- Is there a pass mark?
- No. Each question is worth one mark, for a score out of 25, and there is no pass mark. Children do not see their score at the end.
- Will we find out the score?
- Yes. The school must tell parents their child's score by the end of the summer term. School-by-school results are not published.
- Can children with extra needs get help?
- Yes. The school can arrange things such as an audio version, bigger or smaller text, different colours, someone to type the answers, or a Next button in place of the pause. There is no extra time on each question.
