NWEA MAP Growth practice, by grade

MAP Growth practice tests

MAP Growth is the test many US schools give in the fall, winter and spring to see how a child is growing in math, reading and language. It is made by NWEA. It has no time limit, and it adapts: a right answer brings a harder question, a miss brings an easier one. Some districts also use MAP scores when they choose children for gifted programs.

Our MAP Growth practice tests come in Math, Reading and Language, each with 43 questions like the real test and no clock. Math covers the four goal areas of Math 2-5 in the same proportions. Reading has stories, poems, plays and nonfiction to read, and word questions, across the three goal areas of Reading 2-5. Language asks about writing, grammar and usage, and capitals, punctuation and spelling, the three goal areas of Language 2+. Math and Reading adapt like the real test: a right answer brings a harder question and a miss an easier one, and the report shows the Level your child reached in each goal area. Each answer is final once your child moves on, as on test day. Every test is new, and the score shows straight away.

  • Grade 3 Reading: the big idea of a poem

    Puddle Day

After the rain, the sidewalk is a map of tiny lakes. I jump in one. It splashes up and shivers when it shakes. One puddle holds a piece of sky, one holds a passing cloud, one holds a robin taking a bath and singing very loud. I float a leaf across a lake, a boat without a mast. I blow, and off it goes to sea, so slowly, then so fast! I lean above the biggest one. A face looks up at me, with muddy boots and messy hair, as happy as can be. My mother calls me in at last. My socks are soaking through. But if the rain comes back tomorrow, I'll know just what to do.

Which idea best fits the poem?

    1. ARain spoils a day of play.

    2. BFinally

Questions

What parents ask

Are these real MAP Growth questions?
No. MAP Growth questions are secure. We write our own questions and reading passages from the Common Core standards MAP Growth follows, with the same length, goal areas and kinds of question.
Is this test adaptive like the real one?
Yes, for Math and Reading. Like MAP Growth, our test picks each question from your child's last answer: a right answer brings a harder one and a miss an easier one, from two grades below to two grades above. The report shows the Level your child reached, overall and in each goal area. Language is a fixed test for now, and Math and Reading also come as a fixed Practice test that reaches a grade below and a grade above.
Which test should my child practice?
The ones for their grade now. Most children in Grades 2 to 5 sit Math 2-5 and Reading 2-5, and some schools also give Language 2+. Some Grade 2 children sit the K-2 tests instead. Your child's school can tell you which.
What is on the Reading test?
Eight texts to read, each with three to five questions: stories, poems and plays, and science, history and how-to texts. Questions on word meanings come in between. Some questions ask for two answers. NWEA's Reading 2-5 has three goal areas, literary text, informational text and vocabulary, and each gets about a third of our test.
What is on the Language test?
Most writing questions show a short paragraph and ask for the best topic sentence, linking word or ending, or the sentence that does not belong. The rest ask which word or sentence is correct: grammar and usage, and capitals, punctuation and spelling. Each of the three gets about a third of the test, as on NWEA's Language 2+, which some score reports call Language Usage. Every question has four choices.
Is it free?
Sitting is free: make a free account and your child can sit as many MAP tests as you like. The US bundle (US$99 for six months) covers MAP Growth and every other US test we offer, and shows which questions were right, the right answers and a worked solution or explanation for each.
Does a practice score predict my child's RIT score?
No. A RIT score comes from NWEA's own questions and scale, which only the real test can give. Our Level is our own scale: the grade times 3, plus 1, 2 or 3 for the start, middle or end of that grade, so Level 14 means questions from the middle of Grade 4. The report shows it for each goal area, with the number of questions answered correctly.
