Naglieri General Ability Tests
NGAT practice tests
The NGAT (Naglieri General Ability Tests) is three short tests of reasoning, Verbal, Nonverbal and Quantitative, published by MHS. Every question is pictures, shapes or numbers, with wordless animated directions, so a child does not need to read English to show how they think. School districts use it to find children for gifted and talented programs, often in place of the NNAT.
Our NGAT practice tests follow MHS's published shape: three tests of 40 questions each, 30 minutes up to Grade 2 and 35 minutes from Grade 3, with a form for each grade from Kindergarten to Grade 9. Each test is new when your child starts it, and the score shows straight away.

Questions in the NGAT style
Written by us in the style of the published NGAT question types.
Grade 2, Verbal: which one does not belong
Five of these pictures go together. Which picture does NOT belong?
- A
- B
- C
- D
- E
- F
Show the answer and whyHide the answer
AnswerBName each picture to yourself.
Five of them are things that carry people from place to place.
Final answer
A spoon, the only picture that is not one of the things that carry people from place to place.
Remember
Name every picture to yourself first.
Grade 1, Nonverbal: shape patterns
Which picture belongs in the empty box?
- A
- B
- C
- D
- E
Show the answer and whyHide the answer
AnswerELook along the top row and say what changes from each box to the next.
Check that the same change happens in the next row.
Here the shape changes color each time.
Final answer
A small yellow circle.
Remember
Look along a full row and name what changes from each box to the next: the color, the size or the way a shape points.
Grade 4, Quantitative: number pairs
[ 24 → 19 ] [ 8 → 3 ] [ 16 → ? ]
Find the rule that turns each first number into the second. Which number should replace the question mark?
- A13
- B10
- C12
- D6
- E11
Show the answer and whyHide the answer
AnswerE11Look at the first pair
24 becomes 19. Think of rules that could do that.
Test each rule on the second pair
8 becomes 3. Only "subtract 5" works for both.
Use the same rule on 16.
Final answer
11.
Remember
Find a rule that turns the first number into the second in the first pair.
The test
Three tests
| Test | Grades | Questions | Time | What is on it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verbal | Kindergarten to Grade 8 | 40 | 30 or 35 minutes | Six pictures of everyday things: five share an idea, and the child picks the one that does not belong, as on MHS's test. |
| Nonverbal | Kindergarten to Grade 8 | 40 | 30 or 35 minutes | Shapes and patterns that change in shape, color, order and direction: pick the piece that completes a pattern or a grid, or the shape that comes next in a row. |
| Quantitative | Kindergarten to Grade 8 | 40 | 30 or 35 minutes | Number and picture patterns built on simple math, with no word problems: counting pictures and bead patterns up to Grade 2, then number series, pairs and puzzles, with balance scales at every grade. |
The three tests, their length and their time (30 minutes up to Grade 2, 35 from Grade 3) are MHS's published figures, and MHS gives a form for each grade. MHS does not publish the question types inside the Nonverbal and Quantitative tests or how hard each grade's form is: those are our estimate.

Questions
What parents ask
- Are these real NGAT questions?
- No. NGAT questions are secure. We write our own questions in the style of the three tests MHS describes, at the same length and time limit.
- Which form should my child practice?
- The form for your child's grade on test day. MHS gives each grade from Kindergarten its own form; choose your child's grade below.
- How is the NGAT different from the NNAT?
- The NNAT (Pearson) is one test of shapes. The NGAT (MHS) has three tests, Verbal, Nonverbal and Quantitative, still built from pictures, shapes and numbers rather than reading. Some districts have moved from the NNAT to the NGAT.
- Is the NGAT used in Canada?
- Yes. In Ontario, the Peel District School Board gives the NGAT to Grade 4 students, usually in the fall, to screen for gifted programs. Our page on Ontario gifted tests shows which test other boards give.
- My child cannot read yet. Is that a problem?
- No. The NGAT has no reading in the questions. Up to Grade 2, our tests also read each question's one-line direction aloud.
- Is it free?
- A free account includes 3 practice tests. A plan opens unlimited NGAT tests and shows which questions were right, the right answers and a worked solution for each. The gifted pack (US$49 for six months) covers CogAT, NNAT, OLSAT and NGAT. The US bundle (US$99) covers every US test we offer.
NGAT and Naglieri General Ability Tests are published by Multi-Health Systems Inc. (MHS). Scholar Tests is not affiliated with or endorsed by MHS or any school district. Our practice questions are written by us in the style of the published NGAT question types; they are not real NGAT questions, and a practice score is not an NGAT score.
