NAPLANYear 3
NAPLAN Year 3 practice tests
Year 3 is the first time your child sits NAPLAN, so the format is as new as the questions. Practise all four tests here: timed reading, numeracy and language conventions, and a writing task that comes back marked.
The tests
Every Year 3 test
The real test adapts as your child answers, giving each student a different pathway. These papers do not: everyone sits the same one, at the difficulty of an average pathway. Everything else follows ACARA’s published shape. A free account includes 3 practice tests. A plan opens unlimited tests and the answers.

Numeracy
36 questions in 45 minutes across number, algebra, measurement, space and statistics. Four options, no calculator.

Conventions of Language
52 questions in 45 minutes: spelling, then grammar and punctuation. Four options on the grammar half; the spelling half is typed.

Reading
39 questions in 45 minutes across seven texts: stories, a poem, information and persuasive writing, pitched at Year 3.

Writing
One prompt, marked against ACARA’s ten published criteria. ACARA sets either a narrative or a persuasive task and does not say which in advance, so both are here.

What to expect
What is different about Year 3
The first NAPLAN
Nothing about the test is familiar yet: the screen, the tools, the clock. A practice run at home means none of that is a surprise on the day.
Writing is by hand, on paper
Reading, numeracy and language conventions are on screen, but Year 3 writes its piece by hand. Our writing practice is typed, so it is worth also writing one piece out on paper.
No calculator
Year 3 numeracy is worked out without a calculator, so mental and written methods carry the whole test.
Past papers
Year 3 NAPLAN past papers
ACARA, the body that runs NAPLAN, has released real Year 3 papers from 2012 to 2016 only. They were written for the old paper test, and nothing later is released. Its demonstration site shows the on-screen format, but gives no answers, and has no writing task, because Year 3 writing is on paper.
Use them to see the style of question, then use timed papers with answers to practise.
