NSW Selective
The Selective High School Placement Test decides Year 7 places at NSW's selective high schools. Children sit it in Year 6, on a computer: Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills and a writing task, with no calculator.

What’s covered
The four parts of the selective test
Each part counts for a quarter of the result. Our papers follow the times and lengths the NSW Department of Education publishes, and every question is explained afterwards.
- 38 answers · 45 min
Reading
Two extracts to compare, a gap-fill text, a poem, sentences to put back, and four short texts.
Start the test - 35 questions · 40 min
Mathematical Reasoning
Year 6 maths in two- and three-step problems. Multiple choice, no calculator.
Start the test - 40 questions · 40 min
Thinking Skills
Judging arguments, spotting flawed reasoning, logic puzzles, and shapes. Four options.
Start the test - 1 task · 30 min · marked
Writing
A different kind of writing each time: a story, a report, a diary entry, advice. Every piece comes back marked, with the child’s own sentences quoted as the reason.
Write a piece
The NSW Department of Education publishes each test's length and time. The mix of questions inside each test follows its official practice tests. The real maths test gives five choices on every question; most of ours do, and some give four. The real reading test fills its gaps with drop-down lists and by dragging sentences into place; ours asks about each gap as its own question, for the same mark.
