Ode to the Number 9 Bus
O Number 9, you big blue whale of a bus, I praise you from the corner of Fifth and Grand, where you kneel to the curb with a long, tired sigh and open your doors like arms. You never ask who we are. You take the nurse coming home from the night shift, her badge still clipped to her coat, her eyes half closed. You take the boy with the cello case that is taller than his little sister, the grandmother with two bags of onions, the man who hums old songs in Portuguese, and me, with my backpack and my unfinished math. In January you are a warm room on wheels, your windows clouded with all our breathing, and someone always draws a smiling face that slowly drips down the glass. Your bell chimes like a polite question. Your driver, Ms. Alvarez, nods to each of us as if we were guests arriving at her party. People say you are slow, and you are. People say you are crowded, and you are. But you are our ark. Twice a day you gather us in, two of every kind of tired, hopeful, ordinary person, and carry us safely through the flood of traffic. Tomorrow at 7:42 I will stand on the corner again, and you will come rumbling around the bend, a little late, as always, and wide open.

Dim the Skyline for the Birds
Every spring and fall, billions of birds pass over North America on their way between their winter homes and their summer nesting grounds. Most songbirds, including warblers, thrushes, and sparrows, make this journey at night, using the stars and Earth's magnetic field to find their way. When they fly over a brightly lit city, however, many of them get into serious trouble.
Artificial light draws night-migrating birds off course, especially on cloudy or foggy nights. Confused by the glare, they circle lit buildings until they are exhausted, or they crash into windows. Scientists estimate that collisions with buildings kill hundreds of millions of birds in the United States every year.
That is why this newspaper urges the city of Riverton to adopt a "Lights Out" policy. During the spring and fall migrations, city-owned buildings should switch off lights in empty offices, lobbies, and decorative spotlights between 11 p.m. and dawn, and the city should encourage private building owners to do the same. Several large cities already run programs like this, and where buildings have dimmed their lights, researchers have counted far fewer dead birds below their windows.
The change would cost the city almost nothing. In fact, it would save money, because every light switched off is electricity that taxpayers no longer have to buy.
Some readers may doubt that the problem is serious here. But last May, a reader on Linden Street found a small yellow bird lying stunned beneath her apartment window, which proves that the problem in Riverton grows worse every year.
The birds that pass over Riverton have flown thousands of miles to reach our sky. The least we can do is turn off the lights and let them pass.

The bones of the human skeleton do several important jobs that keep the body working. According to the National Institutes of Health, the skeleton supports the body and stores minerals such as calcium. Bones protect soft organs, such as the brain inside the skull and the heart behind the ribs. Furthermore, many bones make new blood cells in the soft marrow at their centers. Muscles pull on bones, which act like levers that let the body walk, run, and lift. In all of these ways, bones do far more than simply hold the body up.

Members of the city council, I urge you to restore the old train station on Front Street rather than tear it down. Built in 1910, the brick station is one of the last buildings left from the years when our town grew up around the railroad. A study by the county historical society found that restored historic buildings in nearby towns attract thousands of visitors each year. Some residents argue that the land would be more useful as a modern parking garage. However, a restored station could house shops and a small museum that would draw people downtown, which a garage could never do. Our science teacher showed us how to grow crystals from salt and water. Saving the old train station would protect our history and strengthen our downtown, so please vote to restore it.

I believe that well-run zoos deserve our support because they help protect endangered animals from extinction. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, zoo breeding programs helped bring back the California condor after the last wild condors were captured in 1987. Each year, zoo visits teach millions of people about wildlife and the dangers that animals face in the wild. Critics point out that even the biggest zoo exhibits are tiny next to the land that wild animals roam. ______, modern zoos build large, natural habitats and share what they learn to help animals in the wild. Despite their limits, well-run zoos deserve our support because they help keep rare animals from disappearing.
