The Bakery at Dawn
Before the sun, before the bus, before the city wakes, the bakery on Fourth Street hums with all the bread it bakes. Its ovens glow like sleepy dragons breathing warm and slow, while Mrs. Lin, in flour-white sleeves, pats rows and rows of dough. The baker's radio plays low, a song from long ago, and Mrs. Lin hums right along while trays slide in a row. The windows fog, the mixers spin, the smell of cinnamon slips out beneath the bakery door to greet the rising sun. Each morning, walking to the train, my dad and I stop by. We share a roll, still warm inside, and wave the shop goodbye.
