  1. Mae Jemison: Reaching for Space

As a girl growing up in Chicago in the 1960s, Mae Jemison spent hours in the library reading about astronomy and dinosaurs. She watched the early space missions on television and noticed something that bothered her: none of the astronauts looked like her. She decided that would not stop her.

Jemison worked hard in school and entered Stanford University at just sixteen. She studied chemical engineering and also took classes in African American studies, and she was active in dance and theater. She believed that science and the arts were not opposites but partners, since both require creativity and careful observation.

After Stanford, she earned a medical degree and became a doctor. She spent two years as a medical officer with the Peace Corps in West Africa, caring for volunteers and helping with health research. The work demanded quick decisions and calm leadership, skills that would later serve her well.

In 1987, NASA selected Jemison as an astronaut. On September 12, 1992, she flew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, becoming the first African American woman to travel into space. During the eight-day mission, she conducted experiments on how the body responds to weightlessness.

After leaving NASA, Jemison started a company to develop new technology and founded programs to encourage young people, especially girls and students of color, to study science. She often tells students that the most important thing is not to limit themselves. In her view, curiosity is a kind of fuel, and anyone can use it.

  7. The Toughest Tiny Animal

If you scooped up a clump of damp moss and looked at it through a microscope, you might see a strange creature lumbering along like a miniature bear. It has a plump body, eight stubby legs tipped with claws, and a mouth shaped like a tube. It is a tardigrade, sometimes called a water bear, and most are less than a millimeter long.

Tardigrades live almost everywhere: in moss and soil, in ponds and oceans, on mountaintops and on the deep sea floor. What makes them famous, though, is not where they live but what they can survive.

When its surroundings dry out, a tardigrade can pull in its legs, lose almost all the water in its body and curl into a dry, shriveled ball called a tun. In this state its body processes nearly stop. A tardigrade in a tun can survive conditions that would kill most living things, including freezing cold, high heat, and very high levels of radiation. Scientists have even exposed tardigrades to the vacuum of space, and some survived the trip.

When water returns, the tun can absorb it, swell back into shape and walk away as if nothing had happened.

Researchers study tardigrades partly out of curiosity and partly because their survival tricks could be useful. If scientists understood how tardigrades protect their cells while dried out, the knowledge might someday help preserve medicines that now must be kept cold.

Not bad for an animal you could fit on the period at the end of this sentence.

    3. CMedicines must be sent into space to work.
