Mae Jemison: Reaching for Space
As a girl growing up in Chicago in the 1960s, Mae Jemison spent hours in the library reading about astronomy and dinosaurs. She watched the early space missions on television and noticed something that bothered her: none of the astronauts looked like her. She decided that would not stop her.
Jemison worked hard in school and entered Stanford University at just sixteen. She studied chemical engineering and also took classes in African American studies, and she was active in dance and theater. She believed that science and the arts were not opposites but partners, since both require creativity and careful observation.
After Stanford, she earned a medical degree and became a doctor. She spent two years as a medical officer with the Peace Corps in West Africa, caring for volunteers and helping with health research. The work demanded quick decisions and calm leadership, skills that would later serve her well.
In 1987, NASA selected Jemison as an astronaut. On September 12, 1992, she flew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, becoming the first African American woman to travel into space. During the eight-day mission, she conducted experiments on how the body responds to weightlessness.
After leaving NASA, Jemison started a company to develop new technology and founded programs to encourage young people, especially girls and students of color, to study science. She often tells students that the most important thing is not to limit themselves. In her view, curiosity is a kind of fuel, and anyone can use it.

Why the Moon Changes Shape
Over about a month, the moon seems to grow from a thin sliver into a bright circle and then shrink again. But the moon itself does not change shape. What changes is how much of its sunlit side we can see.
The moon does not make its own light. Like Earth, it is a ball that is always half lit by the sun and half in darkness. As the moon travels around Earth, we see that lit half from different angles.
When the moon is between Earth and the sun, its lit side faces away from us. We see little or nothing of it, and this is called a new moon. Over the following days, as the moon moves along its path, a thin crescent of the lit side comes into view. The visible part grows, or waxes, through first quarter, when we see half of the moon's face lit, and then through a stage called waxing gibbous.
About two weeks after the new moon, Earth is between the sun and the moon. Now we see the entire lit side: a full moon. After that, the lit portion we can see shrinks, or wanes, back through gibbous, last quarter and crescent, until the cycle begins again with another new moon.
The whole cycle takes about 29 and a half days. People have used it to keep track of time for thousands of years; in fact, the word "month" comes from an old word related to "moon."
A common mistake is to think Earth's shadow causes the phases. Earth's shadow falls on the moon only during a lunar eclipse, which is much rarer.
