The Lighthouse Cat
Every evening, Grandpa Ellis climbed the one hundred and twelve steps of the lighthouse to check the great lamp. And every evening, a gray cat named Pepper climbed right behind him.
Pepper had arrived on a fishing boat three summers before. The captain said she had jumped aboard in a harbor far to the south and refused to leave until she smelled the sea air of this rocky island. Grandpa Ellis gave her a saucer of milk, and she never went back to the boat.
One October night, a storm rolled in faster than anyone expected. Rain hammered the windows, and the wind howled around the tower like a hungry wolf. Halfway up the stairs, the lights in the stairwell flickered and went out.
Grandpa Ellis stopped. He could not see his own hand. His flashlight was in the kitchen, all the way at the bottom. "Well, Pepper," he said quietly, "I suppose we wait."
But Pepper did not wait. She brushed against his leg and began to climb, her collar bell ringing softly with every step. Ring, ring, ring. Grandpa Ellis smiled, rested a hand on the cold rail, and followed the sound.
At the top, he found the switch for the backup lamp by feel and pressed it. A beam of light swept across the black water, just in time for a small fishing boat to see the rocks and turn away.
The next morning, the boat's captain knocked on the lighthouse door with a fresh fish wrapped in newspaper. "For the keeper," he said. Grandpa Ellis laughed and pointed at Pepper, who was already licking her paws. "Then it belongs to her."

The Red Mitten
Sam found the mitten on the bus stop bench. It was small and red, with a white snowflake stitched on the back. It was clearly made for a little kid's hand.
"Someone's hand is cold right now," Sam said to his friend Nia.
"Just leave it," said Nia. "Whoever lost it will come back."
But the bus was coming, and the sky was turning gray. Sam tucked the mitten into his backpack. At school, he showed it to the office secretary, Mrs. Ortiz.
"Hmm," said Mrs. Ortiz. "No one has asked about a mitten today. But that snowflake looks handmade. Somebody worked hard on it."
Sam had an idea. He drew a picture of the mitten, wrote FOUND: ONE RED MITTEN underneath, and asked Mrs. Ortiz to tape it to the office window where every family could see it.
Three days passed. Sam checked the window every morning. On the fourth day, a woman came into the office holding the hand of a kindergartner. The little girl was wearing one red mitten with a white snowflake on it.
"My grandmother made these," the girl whispered when Mrs. Ortiz handed her the missing one. She pulled it on and wiggled her fingers.
