Answers and working

Paper 1: multiple choice (calculator allowed)

  1. 1.B (4.47). R = √(22 + 42) = √20. The answer is 4.47.
  2. 2.D (22680). The term in x4 is 7C4 × 23 × (−3x)4. 7C4 = 35, so the coefficient is 22680. The answer is 22680.
  3. 3.D (64/3). s = ∫v dt = (2/3)t3 − 8t2 + 24t, with s = 0 at t = 0. At t = 2, s = 64/3. The answer is 64/3.
  4. 4.B (9). x2 − 6x + 18 = (x − 3)2 + 9. The squared bracket is never negative, so y is least when x = 3, where y = 9. The answer is 9.
  5. 5.C (x = 70.5°, 289.5°). Factorise: (3 cos x − 1)(cos x − 5) = 0. cos x = 1/3, and cos x = 5 has no solution. The answer is x = 70.5°, 289.5°.
  6. 6.B (4/3). The curve meets the x-axis at x = −2 and x = 0. ∫ from −2 to 0 of (−x2 − 2x) dx = 4/3. Area = 4/3. The answer is 4/3.
  7. 7.C (k < −12 or k > 12). b2 − 4ac = k2 − 4 × 3 × 12 = k2 − 144. Two real roots needs k2 > 144, so k < −12 or k > 12. The answer is k < −12 or k > 12.
  8. 8.C (16 + 10√3). Multiply out: 25 − 5√3 + 15√3 − 3 × 3. Collect: 16 + 10√3. The answer is 16 + 10√3.
  9. 9.D (128). V = x(12 − 2x)2, so dV/dx = (12 − 2x)(12 − 6x). dV/dx = 0 at x = 2 (x = 6 gives no box), and d2V/dx2 < 0 there, a maximum. V = 2 × 82 = 128. The answer is 128.
  10. 10.C ((4, −8)). The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, so AC and BD share a midpoint. D = A + C − B = (4, −8). The answer is (4, −8).

Paper 1: short answers

  1. 11.216. V = x3, so dV/dx = 3x2 = 108. dV/dt = 108 × 2 = 216. The answer is 216.
  2. 12.477. dA/dr = 4πr − 1600/r2 = 0 when r3 = 800/(2π), so r = 5.03. d2A/dr2 > 0 there, a minimum, and A = 477. The answer is 477.
  3. 13.1.41. Solving the two equations gives A(1, 4) and B(2, 5). AB = √(12 + (1)2) = 1.41. The answer is 1.41.
  4. 14.1. Square both sides: −x + 10 = (x + 2)2, which gives x = 1 or x = −6. Check each in the original: x = −6 makes the right side negative, so only x = 1 works. The answer is 1.
  5. 15.−106. dy/dx = 3x2 − 18x = 3x(x − 6), which is 0 at x = 0 and x = 6. d2y/dx2 = 6x − 18 is negative at x = 0 and positive at x = 6. So the maximum is at x = 0 and the minimum at x = 6, where y = −106. The answer is −106.
  6. 16.15. a = dv/dt = 6t − 9. At t = 4, a = 15. The answer is 15.
  7. 17.4. The curve runs from −7 to 1 with period 180°. The line y = −4 lies between them, so it crosses the curve twice in each full cycle: 4 times from 0° to 360°. The answer is 4.
  8. 18.60.3. R cos α = 4 and R sin α = 7, so tan α = 7/4. α = tan⁻¹(7/4) = 60.3°. The answer is 60.3°.
  9. 19.4. −2x2 + 4x + 2 = −2(x − 1)2 + 4. The squared bracket is never negative, and it is subtracted, so y is greatest when x = 1, where y = 4. The answer is 4.
  10. 20.−3. Divide through by x: y/x = ax + b, a straight line with gradient a and intercept b. Gradient = (−16 + 1) ÷ (7 − 2) = −3; then the intercept from either point. The answer is −3.
  11. 21.125/6. The curve meets the x-axis at x = 1 and x = 6. ∫ from 1 to 6 of (x2 − 7x + 6) dx = −125/6, negative because the region is below the axis. Area = 125/6. The answer is 125/6.
  12. 22.11.0. 99924 = 33308e0.1t, so e0.1t = 3.000. Take ln: 0.1t = ln 3.000, so t = 11.0. The answer is 11.0 years.
  13. 23.6.49. Take lg of both sides: (x − 1) lg 2 = lg 45. x = lg 45 ÷ lg 2 + 1 = 6.49. The answer is 6.49.
  14. 24.−4. By the chain rule, dy/dx = −4(−2x + 1). At x = 0, −2(0) + 1 = 1, so dy/dx = −4. The answer is −4.
  15. 25.3/4. The radius to P has gradient 4/3, so the tangent has gradient −3/4. The tangent is 3x + 4y = 3; put x = 0: y = 3/4. The answer is 3/4.

Questions parents ask

What does the Sec 4 A-Math paper cover?
The whole SEC G3 Additional Mathematics syllabus: Secondary 3's algebra and coordinate geometry, plus trigonometric equations, identities and graphs, the R-formula, proofs in plane geometry, and differentiation and integration with their uses. Schools choose their own order, so check your school's topic list for each exam.
How is it marked?
Paper 1 is worth 90, as the O-Level paper is: the 10 multiple-choice questions are worth 3 marks each and the 15 typed answers 4, for 90 in all. The real paper splits each question into parts and gives marks for method; we mark one final answer per question, correct to 3 significant figures (an angle to 1 decimal place) where it is not exact. Paper 2 is marked by you: after you hand in, you see a model answer and tick each marking point your working made, one tick a mark.
What is in Paper 2?
A whole written paper of 10 questions and 90 marks in 2 hours 15 minutes, like the O-Level's Paper 2, with a trigonometric identity to prove, a plane geometry proof, and longer calculus questions on stationary points, rates of change, areas and kinematics. It is done on paper, in the practice room or from the button above, and every question has a model answer to mark against.
Can my child use a calculator?
Yes, in both papers, as in the O-Level A-Math exam. Set it to degrees for angles, and to radians for calculus with sin, cos and tan.
Is it free?
A free account includes 3 practice tests. The Singapore pack (S$99 for 6 months) opens unlimited tests and shows the right answer and the working for every question.
Is this a real O-Level paper?
No. It is written by us in the shape of SEAB's SEC G3 Additional Mathematics papers. Past O-Level papers are copyright and are not used. Scholar Tests is not connected with MOE, SEAB or any school.
