Answers and working

Paper 1: multiple choice (calculator allowed)

  1. 1.D (1.2 × 10⁻⁶). Move the decimal point so one non-zero digit sits before it: 1.2. The point moved 6 places right, so the power is negative: 10⁻⁶. The answer is 1.2 × 10⁻⁶.
  2. 2.A (C = 8k + 7). 7 is the fixed part and 8 changes with each kilometre. The formula is C = 8k + 7.
  3. 3.C (65 + 13 × n). The 65 counts once and the 13 comes round for every one of the n steps, so only the 13 is multiplied by n: 65 + 13 × n.

Paper 1: short answers

  1. 4.11. From −5 °C up to 0 °C is 5 degrees, and from 0 °C up to 6 °C is 6 more: 11 degrees.
  2. 5.2140. Volume of a sphere = 4/3 πr³. = 4/3 × π × 8³. This is 2140 cm³.
  3. 6.32. Write y = kx, find k from x = 5, y = 40, then put in x = 4: y = 32.
  4. 7.2100. After a 20% decrease the amount is 80% of the original, so the original is 1680 ÷ 0.8. So the answer is 2100.
  5. 8.35. Each term is 3 more than the last, so the nth term is 5 + (n − 1) × 3. For n = 11: 5 + 10 × 3 = 35.
  6. 9.225. The rise is $780 − $240 = $540. A percentage rise is always measured against what you started with, so compare 540 with 240: 540 ÷ 240 = 2.25, which is 225%.
  7. 10.2. Take 1 off both sides to get 7x = 14, then divide by 7: x = 2.
  8. 11.60. The marked angle and the one asked for are in matching positions at the two crossings, so they are equal — the answer is 60°.
  9. 12.75. The square root of 36 is 6, because 6 × 6 = 36. 9 squared is 81, because 9 × 9 = 81. 81 − 6 = 75.

Paper 1: longer questions

  1. 13.416. The commission is 4% of $2900 = $116, so the pay is $300 + $116. So the answer is $416.
  2. 14.54.00. The takings were $1512.50 and the profit was $162.50, so the 25 items cost $1350 in all. So the answer is $54.00.

Paper 2: multiple choice (calculator allowed)

  1. 1.B (x = 2.68 or x = −1.68). Here a = 2, b = −2 and c = −9. x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a = (2 ± √76) / 4. The answer is x = 2.68 or x = −1.68.
  2. 2.B (3x + 5y). Join only like terms: the x terms make 3x and the y terms make 5y. So it is 3x + 5y.
  3. 3.D (5). v − u = at, so 19 − 4 = 15. Then t = 15 ÷ 3 = 5.

Paper 2: short answers

  1. 4.225. 300 paces puts Isla at 75 metres. Reading 75 metres back down Hugo's line gives 225 paces.
  2. 5.5. Take 2x from both sides: 3x + 13 = 28. Take off 13: 3x = 15. Divide by 3: x = 5.
  3. 6.19. From −3 °C up to 0 °C is 3 degrees, and from 0 °C up to 16 °C is 16 more: 19 degrees.
  4. 7.16. Write y = k/x, find k from x = 2, y = 48, then put in x = 6: y = 16.
  5. 8.0.8. 2 cm on the map is 2 × 40,000 = 80,000 cm in real life, and 100,000 cm make a kilometre. So the answer is 0.8 km.
  6. 9.1/3. Leaving out the pink ones and every one whose number is a multiple of 3 leaves 4 of the 12: 4/12 = 1/3.
  7. 10.12. Take 13 off both sides to get 7x = 84, then divide by 7: x = 12.
  8. 11.504. The rise takes $560 to $672. The reduction comes off THAT price, not the first one: 25% of $672 is $168, leaving $504. Adding the rates would have given $532, which is not the same thing.
  9. 12.700. After a 20% increase the amount is 120% of the original, so the original is 840 ÷ 1.2. So the answer is 700.

Paper 2: longer questions

  1. 13.1650. Area = 11 × 10 = 110 m². Cost = 110 × $15 = $1650.
  2. 14.1218. Weekday pay is $812. The weekend rate is $58 an hour, so the weekend pay is $406. So the answer is $1218.

Questions parents ask

What does the G1 paper cover?
The topics in SEAB's G1 Mathematics syllabus: whole numbers, fractions, decimals and negatives, rounding and standard form, ratio, map scales and proportion, percentage, rates and speed, simple algebra and equations, quadratics by the formula, graphs, angles, triangles and quadrilaterals, Pythagoras' theorem and right-angled trigonometry, area and volume, charts and averages, and the probability of one event.
How is it marked?
Each paper is worth 50, as SEAB's are: 12 short answers at 3 marks, then 2 longer questions at 7. SEAB gives marks for working; we mark the final answer only.
Can my child use a calculator?
Yes, in both papers, as in the SEC G1 Mathematics exam. Set it to degrees for angles, and use its π button.
Is it free?
A free account includes 3 practice tests. The Singapore pack (S$99 for 6 months) opens unlimited tests and shows the right answer and the working for every question.
Is this a real N(T)-Level or SEC paper?
