Admissions Exercise for International Students
AEIS practice for every level
A new paper every time, in SEAB's format and set on the level before the one your child is applying for: Mathematics at every level, and English for the Secondary tests. The same papers fit S-AEIS, whose tests MOE sets in the same format.
The pattern
| Test | Part 1 | Part 2 | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PRI 2/3 | 29 multiple choice | 17 short answers | 25 + 40 |
| PRI 4/5 | 30 multiple choice | 8 short answers, 6 open-ended | 35 + 50 |
| SEC 1, 2 and 3 | 34 multiple choice | 20 short answers, 10 to 15 open-ended | 30 + 105 |
| SEC English | A composition, one topic of 2 or 4 | 50 multiple choice | 130 in all |
PRI 2/3 and PRI 4/5 are formats: a Primary 2 and a Primary 3 applicant each sit the PRI 2/3 format on their own level's work. Mathematics has no calculator, and working is shown in Part 2. The composition is 200 to 300 words at SEC 1, 250 to 350 at SEC 2 and 300 to 400 at SEC 3. English Part 2 is 15 comprehension, 15 comprehension cloze, 10 vocabulary and 10 grammar questions. Each test is set on the level before the one applied for: a SEC 1 applicant is tested on Primary 6 work. Source: AEIS test details, SEAB.
Questions parents ask
- What is AEIS?
- The Admissions Exercise for International Students, run by MOE and SEAB, for children from overseas who want a place in a Singapore mainstream primary or secondary school. It is held once a year, and S-AEIS in between for some levels.
- Is S-AEIS the same test?
- Yes, in format. MOE publishes the S-AEIS tests as the AEIS ones: PRI 2/3 and PRI 4 Mathematics, and SEC 1 and SEC 2 English and Mathematics, with the same parts, question counts and times, set on the level before the one applied for. So our AEIS papers are S-AEIS practice too. S-AEIS is for Primary 2 to 4 and Secondary 1 to 2 only. For 2027, MOE says applications open in early January and the tests are at the end of February or early March (tentative), in Singapore, with places starting in April or May.
- Which test should my child sit?
- The one for the level they are applying for, set on one level below it: a child applying for Primary 4 sits the PRI 4/5 test on Primary 3 work, and a child applying for Primary 5 sits it on Primary 4 work. We have a paper for each level, Primary 2 to Secondary 3.
- Does a primary applicant need an English test?
- Yes, but not an AEIS one. Before applying, a primary applicant needs a Cambridge English Qualifications score: A2 Key for Schools at 100 or more for Primary 2, 120 for Primary 3 and 130 for Primary 4, or B1 Preliminary for Schools at 140 or more for Primary 5. Then they sit the AEIS Mathematics test. Secondary applicants need no Cambridge test; they sit AEIS English and Mathematics.
- How does the practice match the real test?
- The same parts, question counts and times as SEAB publishes, on MOE syllabus topics. In Part 2 your child types the answer; the real test also gives marks for working, so have them write it on paper too.
- Is there English practice?
- Yes, for SEC 1 to 3: both parts. Part 2 is all 50 questions. Part 1 is the composition: your child picks one topic, as in the test (two to choose from at SEC 1, four at SEC 2 and 3), types it in 60 minutes and gets a marked report.
- How is the composition marked?
- AEIS publishes no marking scheme, so we mark against SEAB's published PSLE writing objectives in two areas: Content and organisation, and Language. The report quotes your child's own sentences as the reason for each band and gives one thing to do next time. The bands are ours, so this is not a predicted AEIS result.
- Is this the real AEIS paper?
- No. Every question is written by Scholar Tests, and we are not connected with SEAB or MOE. SEAB does not publish past AEIS papers.
- Is it free?
- A free account includes 3 practice tests. The Singapore pack (S$99 for 6 months) opens unlimited tests and shows the right answer and the working for every question.
