Answers and working

Paper 1, Booklet A (no calculator)

  1. 1.A ($1.40). 4% means 4 out of every 100. So the amount is $35.00 × 4 ÷ 100 = $1.40.
  2. 2.A (72 kg). One weighs 24 ÷ 12 = 2 kg. So 36 of them weigh 2 × 36 = 72 kg.
  3. 3.B (30 cm²). The dashed line meets the base at a right angle, so it is the height. Base × height = 10 × 6 = 60, and a triangle is half of that: 30 cm².
  4. 4.D (280). 420 paces puts Finn at 140 metres. Reading 140 metres back down Ben's line gives 280 paces.
  5. 5.D (72). The Car slice is 30 per cent of the chart. And 30 per cent of 240 is 240 ÷ 100 × 30 = 72.
  6. 6.A (30 cm). Two sides carry no size: the step across the top is 7 − 3 = 4 cm and the side below it is 8 − 3 = 5 cm. Adding all six gives 30 cm — the same as going round the whole 7 by 8 rectangle, because a bite out of a corner moves the edges without adding to their total.
  7. 7.C (1 hour 15 minutes). Count on in two steps rather than subtracting the two times as though they were numbers. From 2:55 pm to 3:55 pm is 1 hour, and from there to 4:10 pm is another 15 minutes. Altogether that is 1 hour 15 minutes.
  8. 8.B (24 steps). 12 metres is 12 × 100 = 1200 cm. Each step covers 50 cm, so it takes 1200 ÷ 50 = 24 steps.
  9. 9.D ($84). Find 30% of $120, $36, then take it off: $84.
  10. 10.A (98). The first 4 total 4 × 28 = 112. All 7 total 7 × 30 = 210. The difference, 210 − 112 = 98, is the total of the new ones.

Paper 1, Booklet A, continued

  1. 11.D (2:49 pm). Add the hours first: 12:59 pm plus 1 hour is 1:59 pm. Then the 50 minutes. That takes the minutes past 60, so an hour carries, and it finishes at 2:49 pm.
  2. 12.B ($28.00). 10% means 10 out of every 100. So the amount is $280.00 × 10 ÷ 100 = $28.00.
  3. 13.D (63). An average of 26 across 5 crowds means they come to 5 × 26 = 130 altogether. The 4 printed ones come to 67, so the last one is 130 − 67 = 63.
  4. 14.A (360). 240 paces puts Elena at 60 metres. Reading 60 metres back down Isla's line gives 360 paces.
  5. 15.C (23/25). Per cent means "out of a hundred", so 92% is 92/100 to start with. Cancelling that down as far as it goes gives 23/25.
  6. 16.C (56). The Plums slice is 35 per cent of the chart. And 35 per cent of 160 is 160 ÷ 100 × 35 = 56.
  7. 17.B ($18.00). One costs $4.50 ÷ 6 = $0.75. So 24 of them cost $0.75 × 24 = $18.00.
  8. 18.B (30°). OA and OE lie in a straight line, so the angles between them come to 180°. The ones printed on the diagram take up 85° + 35° = 120°, which leaves 180° − 120° = 60° to share between the two angles marked x, so x = 60° ÷ 2 = 30°.
  9. 19.C ($102). The lamps cost 2 × $21 = $42 and the bulbs cost 5 × $16 = $80, which is $122 altogether. The voucher comes OFF that, so $122 − $20 = $102.
  10. 20.D (20 cm). A square's sides are all equal, so each side is the number that multiplies by itself to make 25, which is 5 cm. Round all four sides is 4 × 5 = 20 cm.

Paper 1, Booklet B (no calculator)

  1. 21.0.64. Ignore the points first: 8 × 8 = 64. Each number has one figure after the point, so the answer has two: 0.64. Multiplying by a number below 1 makes it SMALLER, which is why the answer is less than 0.8.
  2. 22.2/5. Per cent means "out of a hundred", so 40% is 40/100 to start with. Cancelling that down as far as it goes gives 2/5.
  3. 23.270. 180 paces puts Hugo at 90 metres. Reading 90 metres back down Anika's line gives 270 paces.
  4. 24.359.70. Find 9% of $330, $29.70, then add it on: $359.70.
  5. 25.155. The angles at O go all the way round, so they come to 360°. The ones printed on the diagram take up 85° + 120° = 205°, which leaves 360° − 205° = 155°, so x = 155°.
  6. 26.90. The dashed line meets the base at a right angle, so it is the height. Base × height = 20 × 9 = 180, and a triangle is half of that: 90 cm².
  7. 27.142.50. 75% means 75 out of every 100. So the amount is $190.00 × 75 ÷ 100 = $142.50.
  8. 28.72. The two ticked sides are the same length, so the two angles at the ends of the third side are equal. Each of them is 54°, and the three angles come to 180°, so x = 180° − 54° − 54° = 72°.

Paper 2: short answers (calculator allowed)

  1. 1.80. A square's sides are all equal, so each side is the number that multiplies by itself to make 400, which is 20 cm. Round all four sides is 4 × 20 = 80 cm.
  2. 2.44. 25 goes into 100 4 times, so 11/25 is the same as 44/100, and that is 44%.
  3. 3.0.09. Ignore the points first: 3 × 3 = 9. Each number has one figure after the point, so the answer has two: 0.09. Multiplying by a number below 1 makes it SMALLER, which is why the answer is less than 0.3.
  4. 4.47. The two ticked sides are the same length, so the two angles at the ends of the third side are equal. Between them they take up 180° − 86° = 94°, so x = 94° ÷ 2 = 47°.
  5. 5.11.60. 8% means 8 out of every 100. So the amount is $145.00 × 8 ÷ 100 = $11.60.
  6. 6.30. 2% of $1500 = 2/100 × $1500 = $30: $30.
  7. 7.134. The shirts cost 5 × $19 = $95 and the caps cost 3 × $18 = $54, which is $149 altogether. The voucher comes OFF that, so $149 − $15 = $134.
  8. 8.63. The dashed line meets the base at a right angle, so it is the height. Base × height = 14 × 9 = 126, and a triangle is half of that: 63 cm².
  9. 9.53. Split it along the step. The upper rectangle is 3 by 3, which is 9 cm², and the lower one is 11 by 4, which is 44 cm². Together 53 cm². (Taking the 8 by 3 bite out of the whole 11 by 7 rectangle gives the same thing.)
  10. 10.160. The angles at O go all the way round, so they come to 360°. The ones printed on the diagram take up 85° + 70° + 45° = 200°, which leaves 360° − 200° = 160°, so x = 160°.

Paper 2: longer problems at 3 marks

  1. 11.120. The whole shape is 15 × 11 = 165 m². Take away the lawn, 9 × 5 = 45 m², to leave 120 m².
  2. 12.1. Take the fractions one at a time, starting with a half: 48 → 24, then 24 → 6, then 6 → 1. The answer is 1.

Paper 2: longer problems at 4 marks

  1. 13.4. Harry saves $72 a week and still needs $225, which takes 4 weeks when part of a week is rounded up. So the answer is 4.
  2. 14.26. Two sides carry no size: the step across the top is 8 − 3 = 5 cm and the side below it is 5 − 3 = 2 cm. Adding all six gives 26 cm — the same as going round the whole 8 by 5 rectangle, because a bite out of a corner moves the edges without adding to their total.
