RMO, APMOPS, NMOS and SMO-style papers

Maths olympiad practice

A new paper every time in the format of each of Singapore's big maths olympiads: RMO-style for Primary 4 to 6, APMOPS-style for Primary 5 and 6, NMOS-style for Primary 5, and SMO-style Junior and Senior for Secondary 1 to 4. Each is timed and marked the way the contest marks it.

The pattern

StyleForPaperMarks
RMO-style Round 1Primary 4 to 620 questions with five choices, 60 min4 each for 1 to 10 and 6 each for 11 to 20; a blank earns 1, a wrong answer 0. Out of 100
APMOPS-style Round 1Primary 5 and 630 typed answers, 2 h4, 5 and 6 each by tens, nothing off. Out of 150
NMOS-stylePrimary 535 typed answers, 90 min1, 2 and 3 each by tens, then 4 for the last 5. Out of 80
SMO-style Junior and Senior Round 1Secondary 1 to 45 with five choices, then 20 typed, 2 h 30 min1 each, nothing off. Out of 25
SMO-style Junior and Senior Round 2Secondary 1 to 45 written proofs, 3 h (Junior) or 4 h (Senior)7 each, self-marked against a model solution. Out of 35

No calculator in any of them. On our APMOPS-style, NMOS-style and SMO-style papers every typed answer is a whole number. Source: Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, NUS High and the Singapore Mathematical Society.

Questions parents ask

Which contest should my child practise for?
The one they are entered for. RMO is entered through MOE primary schools for Primary 4 to 6. APMOPS is open to every Primary 6 and, in Singapore, to Primary 5 entered by a parent. NMOS is for Primary 5 and is the first step towards NUS High's selection. In secondary school, the SMO's Junior section is for Secondary 1 and 2 and its Senior section for Secondary 3 and 4.
Why does a blank earn a mark on the RMO-style paper?
Raffles marks Round 1 that way: 1 mark for a blank and 0 for a wrong answer. With five choices, a blind guess is worth less than leaving it, unless you can rule out at least one choice. Our paper marks the same way, so your child practises that decision.
What topics come up?
Clever calculation, number patterns, digits and divisibility, counting, logic, angles and area, and word problems on ratio, age, speed and work. The harder questions come last in every paper.
Are these real contest papers?
No. Every question is written by Scholar Tests, in each contest's format. We are not connected with Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, NUS High or the Singapore Mathematical Society, and nothing is copied from a past paper.
Is it free?
