Singapore Mathematical Olympiad, Rounds 1 and 2
SMO-style Junior and Senior practice
A new paper every time: Junior for Secondary 1 and 2, Senior for Secondary 3 and 4. Round 1 is five questions with choices, then twenty where your child types a whole number, with every answer explained. Round 2 is five problems that need a full written proof, with a model solution to mark against.
The pattern
| Section | For | Paper | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Round 1 | Sec 1 and 2 | 25 questions, 2 h 30 min | 1 each, out of 25 |
| Senior Round 1 | Sec 3 and 4 | 25 questions, 2 h 30 min | 1 each, out of 25 |
| Junior Round 2 | Sec 1 and 2 | 5 proofs, 3 h | 7 each, out of 35 |
| Senior Round 2 | Sec 3 and 4 | 5 proofs, 4 h | 7 each, out of 35 |
Questions 1 to 5 have five choices; for 6 to 25 your child types a whole number. Nothing is taken off for a wrong answer. No calculator. When a true answer is a fraction m/n in its lowest terms, the question asks for m + n, as the SMO does. The Society does not publish the number of questions; ours follows recent Round 1 papers. Round 2 is for the top 10% of Round 1: your child writes each proof on paper, types it in, then ticks the points it made against our model solution. The Society publishes no marks a problem; 7 each is our choice, the usual olympiad scale. Source: Singapore Mathematical Society.
Questions parents ask
- What is the SMO?
- The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad, run by the Singapore Mathematical Society. Junior is for Secondary 1 and 2, Senior for Secondary 3 and 4. Round 1 is held at schools in early June; in 2026 it was on 3 June. The top 10% are invited to Round 2.
- What topics come up?
- Many questions follow the school syllabus, then go further. Junior: algebra and identities, number theory, geometry with triangles and circles, and counting. Senior adds quadratics, logarithms, trigonometry, binomial expansions and harder number theory.
- Why do some questions ask for m + n?
- Round 1 answers are whole numbers. When the true answer is a fraction, the question asks your child to write it in lowest terms, m/n, and give m + n. Our papers do the same, so the habit is ready on the day.
- How is Round 2 marked here?
- Round 2 needs full written proofs, which a computer cannot mark fairly. After your child hands in, they see a model solution split into seven points and tick each point their own proof made. A different proof that is complete and correct earns all seven.
- Is a wrong answer marked down?
- No. The Society says every question carries equal weight and does not take marks off. Our papers give 1 mark a question and take nothing off, so always put an answer.
- Are these real SMO papers?
- No. Every question is written by Scholar Tests, in the SMO's format. We are not connected with the Singapore Mathematical Society, and nothing is copied from a past paper.
- Is it free?
- A free account includes 3 practice tests. The Singapore pack (S$99 for 6 months) opens unlimited tests and shows the right answer and the working for every question.
