Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest-style papers
Maths Kangaroo practice for the SMKC
A new paper every time at each SMKC level, from Primary 1 to Secondary 4: five-choice puzzles in three point bands, the hardest last. Each report also gives the score the SMKC way, with its start bonus and a point off for each wrong answer.
The pattern
| Level | Who | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Pre Ecolier | Primary 1 and 2 | 24 |
| Ecolier | Primary 3 and 4 | 24 |
| Benjamin | Primary 5 and 6 | 30 |
| Cadet | Secondary 1 and 2 | 30 |
| Junior | Secondary 3 and 4 | 30 |
Every question has five choices. A third of the questions are worth 3 points, a third 4 and a third 5, getting harder as they go. A blank scores nothing and a wrong answer takes 1 point off. Every student starts with a bonus of 24 points at Primary 1 to 4 and 30 from Primary 5, so no score goes below zero, and the top score is 120 or 150. No calculator: a pencil, an eraser and geometry tools only. Our papers are 75 minutes, as the international competition sets; check your entry for the SMKC's own time. Source: SMKC, SIMCC.
Questions parents ask
- What is the SMKC?
- The Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest, run by SIMCC as Singapore's part of the international Kangaroo competition. It is a paper-based multiple-choice test for Primary 1 to Junior College students, held around April, with private candidates registering through SIMCC.
- How is it scored?
- A right answer earns 3, 4 or 5 points, by how hard the question is. A blank earns nothing and a wrong answer loses 1 point. Every student starts with a bonus of 24 points at Primary 1 to 4 and 30 points from Primary 5, so no score is below zero. Our report gives your child's score this way, beside the plain points.
- Should my child guess?
- A blind guess about breaks even on average: with five choices, a wrong answer costs a point and a right one earns 3 to 5. Once your child can rule out even one choice, a guess is worth making. With no idea at all, a blank is just as good.
- What kind of questions come up?
- Short puzzles more than long sums: patterns, counting, logic, shapes and pictures, number puzzles and, at the higher levels, algebra and geometry. The SMKC says the key skill is logical thinking, not just knowing formulas.
- Are these real SMKC papers?
- No. Every question is written by Scholar Tests, in the competition's format. We are not connected with SIMCC, Kangourou sans Frontières or any national organiser of the competition.
- Is it free?
- A free account includes 3 practice tests. The Singapore pack (S$99 for 6 months) opens unlimited tests and shows the right answer and the working for every question.
