Gifted tests in Ontario

Many Ontario school boards screen a whole grade for gifted programs. Peel gives the NGAT in Grade 4. Toronto and York Region give the CCAT 7 in Grade 3, and York Catholic gives it in Grade 4.

The screen is only the first step. A high score leads to a closer look, often a psychoeducational assessment, and a committee called an IPRC decides who is identified as gifted.

The tests

NGAT and CCAT 7

  • NGATPeel, Grade 4

Three tests, Verbal, Nonverbal and Quantitative, of 40 questions each, 35 minutes a test from Grade 3. Every question is pictures, shapes or numbers, so there is no reading.

Our NGAT practice is on our US pages. Its pack is US$49 for six months, in US dollars.

  • CCAT 7Toronto, York Region and York Catholic, Grades 3 and 4

Three batteries, Verbal, Quantitative and Nonverbal, each with three kinds of question. It is the Canadian edition of CogAT Form 7, with Canadian norms.

Our CCAT practice pack is CA$99 for six months, in Canadian dollars.

Before you start

Should my child practise?

Boards do not agree on this. Peel says no preparation is needed, and children see sample questions on the day. The Toronto District School Board says no preparation or practice is permitted for the CCAT 7, and that practice can make a result invalid. If your board asks you not to practise, follow your board.

Our papers are written by us, not taken from either test. Families use them to see what kind of thinking the tests ask for, and to make the format less of a surprise.

Questions

What parents ask

Which test will my child write?
Ask your child's school: each board chooses its own test and grade, and a board can change it. The table on this page shows what four large boards publish.
Does Peel give all three NGAT tests?
The NGAT has Verbal, Nonverbal and Quantitative tests. Peel does not say on its own pages which of them it gives, so ask your school.
What happens after the screen in Peel?
Peel's Student Review Meeting looks at the NGAT results with input from teachers and families. It may suggest the In-School Enhanced Learning Program, more information, or a psychoeducational assessment. An IPRC decides who is identified as gifted.
Are the NGAT and the CCAT 7 the same test?
No. They are made by different publishers. Both measure reasoning with words, numbers and shapes, but the NGAT uses pictures in place of reading, and the CCAT 7 asks children to read in its Verbal battery.
Is it free?
A free account includes 3 practice tests to write. A pack opens unlimited tests and shows which questions were right, the right answers and a worked solution for each.
