For families in Canada
CCAT practice tests
The CCAT 7 shows how a child reasons with words, numbers and shapes. It is the Canadian edition of CogAT Form 7, with the same three batteries and Canadian norms, and school boards across Canada use it to screen for gifted programs.
Our CCAT-style practice has a paper for each battery at each grade from 3 to 8, with the real test's nine kinds of question, five choices on every question and 30 minutes a battery. Every paper is new when your child starts it, and the score shows straight away.

Choose your child’s grade
Each grade has its own level of the CCAT 7, and Grades 7 and 8 share one. Pick your child’s current grade, then a battery. A free account includes 3 practice tests to write, and you will be asked to make one.
The test
Three batteries
| Battery | The real test | Our practice |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal | Verbal analogies, sentence completion and verbal classification, 10 minutes each | One paper of 64 questions in 30 minutes (62 in Grade 3) |
| Quantitative | Number analogies, number puzzles and number series, 10 minutes each | One paper of 52 questions in 30 minutes |
| Nonverbal | Figure matrices, paper folding and figure classification, 10 minutes each | One paper of 60 questions in 30 minutes (56 in Grade 3) |
Nelson publishes the batteries, the nine kinds of question and the timing. It does not publish how many questions each part has, so our papers use CogAT Form 7's counts, which share the same design. The real test gives each part its own instructions and practice questions; our papers put a battery's three parts back to back.
In Canada
Who writes the CCAT
Many Canadian school boards screen whole grades with the CCAT 7, often in Grade 3 or Grade 4, and use the results with other information to decide who is assessed for a gifted program. In some Ontario boards every Grade 4 child sits Level 10, and a child scoring in the top few percent on more than one part goes on to the next step. Ask your school which grade and level your board uses.

Questions in the CCAT style
Verbal: verbal analogies
fast → slow : cold → ?
The first two words go together. Which word goes with the third word in the same way?
- Aslow
- Bchilly
- Chot
- Dfreezing
- Esoft
Show the answer and whyHide the answer
AnswerChotSay how the first two words go together in a short sentence: "Fast" is the opposite of "slow."
Use the very same sentence with the third word, and look for the word that makes it true.
"Cold" is the opposite of "hot."
Final answer
hot.
Remember
Say how the first two words go together in a short sentence, like "a puppy is a young dog." Then use the very same sentence with the third word and pick the word that makes it true.
Quantitative: number series
30, 33, 36, 39, 42, …
Which number should come next in this series?
- A46
- B84
- C44
- D45
- E48
Show the answer and whyHide the answer
AnswerD45Every hop is +3, so one more hop from 42 lands on 45. Write the gap between each pair down before deciding anything: 30 to 33 is +3, 33 to 36 is +3, 36 to 39 is +3, 39 to 42 is +3.
Every gap is the same, +3, so the series adds 3 each time and nothing else is going on.
The question asks for the very next number, one gap on from 42 — not two.
Final answer
42 + 3 = 45.
Remember
Write the gap between each pair of numbers under the series.
Nonverbal: paper folding
A square of paper is folded, and then a hole is punched through it. Which picture shows the paper when it is opened out?
- A
- B
- C
- D
- E
Show the answer and whyHide the answer
AnswerBEvery hole goes through every layer of the folded paper.
Open the folds one at a time, last fold first. Each fold works like a mirror: every hole gets a twin the same distance from the fold line on the other side.
This paper was folded in half from top to bottom, so the hole becomes 2 holes in all.
Final answer
The square with 2 holes, each mirrored across the fold line.
Remember
A punched hole goes through every layer.

Questions
What parents ask
- Are these real CCAT questions?
- No. We write our own questions in the style of the nine kinds of question the CCAT 7 uses. The real questions are only seen on the day.
- Which grade should my child choose?
- Choose your child's current grade. Grade 3 sits Level 9, Grade 4 Level 10, and so on up to Level 13/14 for Grades 7 and 8. If your board tests in Grade 4, Level 10 is the one to try.
- Is the CCAT the same as CogAT?
- The CCAT 7 is the Canadian edition of CogAT Form 7: the same batteries and kinds of question, with norms from Canadian students. Our CCAT papers leave out American spellings and imperial units.
- How is the CCAT scored?
- Each battery gives a score compared with Canadian children of the same age, usually shown as a percentile. Boards set their own cut-offs. Our practice shows the number of questions answered correctly in each battery, not a CCAT score.
- Is it free?
- A free account includes 3 practice tests to write. The pack (CA$99, in Canadian dollars) opens unlimited tests and shows which questions were right, the right answers and a worked solution for each.
