For Grade 6 students in Ontario

EQAO Grade 6 practice

Every Grade 6 student in Ontario's public schools writes EQAO's Junior Division assessment online in May or June: reading and writing in four sessions of about 35 minutes, and math in four stages of about 30 minutes. It does not count toward report card marks; each part is reported as a level from 1 to 4.

Our EQAO-style practice has both halves of the math, two reading sessions' worth of texts and questions, and the multiple-choice writing questions, all new every time a session starts and all in Canadian English. The real test also asks for written answers that teachers mark; our questions are all marked straight away, so they leave those out.

Questions in the EQAO style

  • Math: percents

5% of the money in a jar is $6.00. How much money is in the jar altogether?

    1. A$12.00
    2. B$0.30
    3. C$120.00
    4. D$114.00
    Show the answer and why
    AnswerC$120.00
    The jar95%= $120.00$6.00
    5% is $6.00, so 1% is $1.20 and 100% is $120.00.
    1. Read which way round this is

The amount given is only 5% of the money, not all of it. The answer must be BIGGER than $6.00.

    2. Find what 1% is worth by sharing that 5% into 5 equal parts: $6.00 ÷ 5 = $1.20.

    3. The whole is 100 of those.

    4. Final answer

      $1.20 × 100 = $120.00.

    Remember

Going forward, find 1% first by dividing by 100, then multiply.

  • Writing: joining ideas

Which word or words best complete the sentence?

Questions

What parents ask

Are these real EQAO questions?
No. We write our own questions on the Grade 6 curriculum. EQAO's own sample test is free on its website, and we suggest trying it too.
Does the Grade 6 assessment count?
No. The results do not go into report card marks. Schools and families use them to see how a student is doing against the provincial standard.
When is it written?
In May or June, on dates the school sets inside EQAO's window.
Can my child use a calculator?
Yes, in math. The real test has one built in, so use one for our practice too.
Is it free?
A free account includes 3 practice tests to write. The EQAO pack (CA$69) opens unlimited practice at Grades 3, 6 and 9, with which questions were right, the right answers and a worked solution for each.
