For Grade 8 students in Qatar

QSTSS admission test practice

Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School takes Qatari students into Grade 9, with a boys' school and a girls' school. Applicants need at least 80% in maths, science and English on their school report, then sit four tests: mathematics on the last two school years, CAT4 for cognitive abilities, the Aptis English test and an Arabic test, followed by an interview.

Our practice covers two of the four tests: a 40-question maths paper on Grade 7 and 8 maths, new every time, and CAT4 practice at Level F, the level for Grade 8, with Level E for anyone younger. Every maths question is in English, with prices in riyals.

Maths

Sit a whole paper, or 10 questions to try it first. A free account includes 3 practice tests to sit, and you will be asked to make one.

  • Mathematics

    40 questions · 60 minutes

Grade 7 and 8 maths: number, algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability.

CAT4 Level F

The four CAT4 batteries at Level F, the level GL sets for Grade 8. Each paper is one battery with the real test’s timing. In Grade 7? Practise Level E.

  • Non-verbal reasoning

    48 questions · 20 minutes

    Figure classification, then figure matrices.

  • Verbal reasoning

    48 questions · 16 minutes

    Verbal classification, then verbal analogies.

  • Quantitative reasoning

    36 questions · 18 minutes

    Number analogies, then number series.

  • Spatial reasoning

    36 questions · 18 minutes

Figure analysis (fold and punch), then figure recognition.

The Ministry says what each test covers but does not publish the maths test's length, time or question types, so our 40 questions in 60 minutes and our mix of strands are our own. We do not know which language the maths test is set in; ours is in English.

What the maths covers

A look at the test

Maths questions in the QSTSS style

  • Geometry: Pythagoras' theorem

The longest side of a right-angled triangle is 15 cm and one of the shorter sides is 9 cm. How long is the third side?

    1. A12 cm
    2. B6 cm
    3. C144 cm
    4. D24 cm
    Show the answer and why
    AnswerA12 cm
    1. The longest side is 15. Square it and the side you know: 15² = 225 and 9² = 81.

    2. Subtract

      225 − 81 = 144.

    3. Take the square root

      √144 = 12.

    Remember

Find the longest side first: it is opposite the right angle.

  • Algebra: gradient of a line

A straight line passes through the points (−1, −5) and (5, −13). What is its gradient?

    1. A−4/3
    2. B−3/4
    3. C−8
    4. D4/3
    Show the answer and why
    AnswerA−4/3
    1. Change in y

      −13 − (−5) = −8.

    2. Change in x

      5 − (−1) = 6.

    3. Divide

      −8 ÷ 6 = −4/3.

    Remember

Gradient is the change in y divided by the change in x.

  • Number: riyals and dollars

The Qatari riyal is fixed at QR 3.64 to US$1. A pair of headphones costs US$50 online, or QR 202 in a shop in Doha. How many riyals cheaper is the cheaper of the two?

    1. AQR 30
    2. BQR 182
    3. CQR 20
    4. DQR 152
    Show the answer and why
    AnswerCQR 20
    1. Change the online price into riyals

      50 × 3.64 = 182.

    2. Compare with the shop

      202 and 182.

    3. The difference is 20 riyals.

    Remember

The riyal is fixed at QR 3.64 to US$1.

Questions

What parents ask

Are these real QSTSS questions?
No. The admission test papers are not published. We write our own questions from Grade 7 and 8 maths, and our CAT4 practice follows GL Assessment's published question types for each battery.
Who can apply to QSTSS?
Qatari students finishing Grade 8, for a place in Grade 9. The Ministry asks for at least 80% in maths, science and English on the last school report before the admission tests.
When are the tests?
Applications usually open in January, and the admission tests are usually held in late March or early April. The Ministry announces each year's dates.
Which CAT4 level should my child practise?
Level F, which GL sets for ages 12 years 6 months to 15 years 11 months: the level for Grade 8. A younger child can start with Level E.
Do you cover the English and Arabic tests?
Not yet. The English test is the British Council's Aptis, and the British Council publishes free practice for it. We cover the maths test and CAT4.
Is it free?
A free account includes 3 practice tests to sit. The pack (QR 299) opens unlimited maths papers and CAT4 Levels E and F, with which questions were right, the right answers and worked solutions.

Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School (QSTSS) is a school of Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
