Questions parents ask

What is a grammar school?
A state secondary school that chooses its pupils by a test, the 11+. It is free to attend. England has grammar schools in some areas only: Kent, Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire and parts of London have the most.
Does the finder cover Northern Ireland?
Yes. Type a BT postcode to see Northern Ireland's nearest grammar schools. Most of them use the SEAG transfer test, sat in P7, and each card says whether the school does.
When does my child sit the 11+?
Usually in September of Year 6, for a place in Year 7 the next September. Families register in the spring or summer of Year 5. Each area sets its own dates, so check the test details page for your school.
Can my child sit the test for more than one area?
Yes. Each area or school has its own registration, and many families register for two. Check each one's dates, as some tests fall on the same day.
Does passing the 11+ mean my child gets a place?
No. Passing makes a child eligible. Places then go by the school's admissions rules, which often rank by score or by distance from home. Each school's admissions policy is on its website.
What is the pass mark?
Each area sets its own, and many change every year. We do not show pass marks, because an old one can mislead. The test details page for each school has the current rules.
How far away is each school?
The finder measures in a straight line from the centre of your postcode area to the school. The distance a school uses for admissions is often by road or from your front door, so it can differ.
