Read your child’s CAT4 report

Copy the four Standard Age Scores from the report your school shared. This page says what each one means, and what the verbal-spatial profile says about how your child learns. It is free, and you do not need an account.

Standard Age Scores (SAS)

Each battery’s SAS is a whole number from 60 to 140. Type one, some or all four.

Nothing you type leaves this page.

Type the scores from the report, and what they mean shows here.

The Standard Age Score compares a child with children of the same age. The average is 100, and two thirds of children score between 85 and 115. Each stanine covers a range of scores.

The stanine bands are GL Assessment’s. The percentiles here come from the bell curve the score is built on. Your child’s report reads them from GL’s own tables, so it can differ by a point or two. The report’s numbers are the ones that count.

Verbal-spatial profile

The seven profiles

The profile compares the Verbal and Spatial scores. It shows whether a child leans towards words or towards shapes and space, and by how much. It says nothing about how able a child is.

The seven profiles and how many children have each are GL Assessment’s. GL does not publish where one profile ends and the next begins, so the point gaps are ours: we chose them so that about as many children fall in each profile as GL reports.

What does the school do with CAT4 results?

There is no pass mark. Schools use the scores and the profile to plan how to teach each child, and some use them for setting or entry. Ask your school how it uses them.

Can our practice papers give a CAT4 score?

No. Only GL Assessment’s scoring, which compares a child with a large national sample, gives a Standard Age Score, and only schools receive the report. Our practice papers show how many questions your child answered correctly and which kinds of question to work on.
